Miniature balls for writing instruments
The writing instrument industry is using different kind of ball materials. Besides the standard materials like stainless steel, ceramic and tungsten carbide Nanoball is also supplying special materials.
The ballpen consists of many single parts. The mine, which is inside of the pen, is composed of two parts: the refill and the pen tip. The ball, which is pressed inside the tip, rotates during the writing process and delivers the ink to the paper. The ball sizes for pen tips are usually in a range between 0.3mm and 1.2mm. Smaller balls are proving a poor writing line. Specially asians prefer tiny writing lines in respect to the filigree letters.
The most common ball materials are stainless steel AISI 420c (1.4034), various tunsten carbides (CE20, Cr24, cobalt free tungsten carbide) and ceramic (Circonium).
The selection of the tungsten carbide dependes on the ink type (oil based, water based or gel ink).
The most qualified material under the standard materials is ceramic. A special advantage is the property of writing on greased paper (sweat of the hand).
